Wardrobe Essentials for Spring (Jeans and Tees)

*the items I am wearing in this post were gifted by Mott & Bow, but all thoughts & opinions are my own*

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that basics make a wardrobe. Without good basics, you will feel like you consistently have nothing to wear & you won’t be able to create a cohesive feel in your wardrobe.
Some of my go-to basics include good jeans, neutral tees, layering pieces (lightweight for spring/summer & heavier for fall/winter), shoes in neutral colors that go with everything, bags in neutral colors, & gold jewelry.

Some of my favorite basics in the last few years have come from Mott & Bow. I own a couple pairs of their jeans & my husband does as well. My newest pair of jeans are the Slim Boyfriend Charlton Jeans in light blue– they are a mid-rise (which I LOVE because I’m petite), medium wash, lightweight jean. They are 98% cotton with 2% elastane, which means they are a slightly rigid denim, but they have some stretch to them. I have found them extremely comfortable to wear in my normal size.

Other basics that I love from Mott & Bow are their tees. The one I am wearing here is the Fitted Crew Marcy Tee in military green. I love a good crewneck tee & this one is soft and comfy. I sized up one because I don’t like to wear tight-fitting clothes & it fits well. The green is perfect for me, but it also comes in 12 other colors.

My other favorite basic tee from Mott & Bow is the Boxy Semi-Crop Noble Tee. I already own it in black & in white & I am SO glad to have the grey to add to my wardrobe since it is SUCH a staple for me. It is a preshrunk 100% cotton & hangs so nicely. I wear my true size & love how it looks tucked or untucked!

In these photos, I am wearing the Slim Boyfriend Mercer Jeans in the bone color, and they are a great white denim option. They aren’t see-through like a lot of white jeans & I am wearing them in my true size & they fit more loosely than the Charlton Jeans. These jeans are also made from 98% cotton & 2% elastane, making them a more rigid denim that still has a comfy amount of stretch to them.

If you’re in need of some high-quality basics to help build your wardrobe, definitely check out Mott & Bow. The quality is so good & their items will last for years to come.

How to Realistically Wear Black Denim Jeans in the Spring (10 different ways)

In the past few years, I have struggled with dressing how I’m “supposed” to dress and actually dressing realistically and how I want to dress. What I mean by that is that NORMALLY for spring its florals, pastels, & color, and while I do enjoy those things, I want to make sure I am dressing how I WANT to and not just what is on trend for the season. These ten outfits may not be your typical “spring” outfits, but they feel very “me”, are quite realistic for where I live, and I love them!

I bought these black denim jeans from Madewell this past winter and they’re so great, but sometimes I find them harder to wear than my blue jeans because I overthink it. This is why I decided to do some styling sessions, so I’d have inspiration to look back on when I want to wear them.

I created a few reels styling them and these are screenshots from those reels (which is why the photos aren’t amazing quality– but they give you the gist of the outfits, which is what’s most important ;). You can see the reels here, here, and here.

As always, I will link everything I can (and similar items!) at the bottom of the post. I love this outfit. I wear this yellow/brown button up religiously in the spring/summer. I bought it from Target a few years ago, so it’s gone now, but I found an almost identical top that I linked below.

This jacket is a perfect spring color & is lightweight and comfy! I paired it with white sneakers which always look so cute for spring.

This little open weave sweater is so cute for spring. You can wear a tank over it or wear it open like I am. I paired it with my birkenstock boston clog lookalikes.

Black on black is always classic and I love this cardigan with the tortoise shell buttons.

This tan/taupe muscle tee is from chicwich and sold out in most sizes now, but I have an almost identical one from target that I linked. It’s so cute and the sleeves make it interesting. I’m wearing my birkenstock sandals and it’s such a casual vibe.

I don’t think I’ll ever stop wearing this cardigan from h&m that I have in two colors (sold out now). It’s the easiest thing to throw on and feel put together. I will link similar cardigans. It’s hard to tell in this photo, but I’m also wearing a striped linen tee. So comfy and cute!

Mott & Bow makes these great boxy cropped tees that dont need to be tucked to look put together. Again, I went with all black here and added a leather backpack and taupe birkenstock sandals for a cool casual vibe.

Chambray is a no brainer when it comes to pairing it with black denim. I chose a heather grey tee and white sneakers to really make this outfit cute!

If you’ve been around for the last year, you know this cotton button up has been a STAPLE in my wardrobe. It is currently sold out, but this style top is SO popular so I linked some similar options.

This outfit is the least “spring-y” of them all, but I love it just the same. It works for spring where I live (where it is still cold and wet and muddy). I love this 100% cotton organic sweater from Quince & you know I’m wearing my blundstones into spring as long as it’s wet out!

crochet sweater and wide leg jeans outfit (and jewelry that makes a difference)

This cute little sweater from target is perfect as we head into spring. It’s definitely a cropped fit, so size up if you’re looking for a more regular length. I am wearing a size medium, for reference.

I also love these wide leg jeans from Madewell. I think this particular pair has sold out, but I will share some similar options below.

I wanted to also share these earrings from Sela Designs. They are a company that donates 100% of their profits to charity because they believe in radical generosity & giving to others like God does with us. Their jewelry is handmade, high quality, & lovely! I’ll be sharing more pieces soon. You can use MARISSA10 for $$ off your purchase. These are the Oakleigh earrings & they’re made with leather so they’re very lightweight & wearable.

A Linen Blend Striped Tee: 3 Ways to Wear it with Summer Pants

Striped shirts are a classic & a favorite of mine in all seasons– they add interest to an otherwise simple outfit & are very cute. A linen blend stripe tee is a perfect staple for spring & summer & the cute one I’m styling in this post is only $10! It comes in other colors & prints but I love the stripes.

If you prefer video content, check out the reel HERE!

As always, I will link everything I can that is available & do my best to find similar options for things that are older or sold out. Thanks for your support!

Look number one features these linen blend jogger pants from Old Navy. I have owned them for at least 3 years now & they bring the style back every year. I just love this color (although they come in other great colors too!) and they’re super comfy. I paired them with this pair of double strap slides from Target ($14.99!) which are a bit elevated (great if you have foot issues & can’t handle the really flat shoes like me!) and comfortable.

Look number two is a pair of wide leg linen pants from Pinkblush (this particular pair has been VERY popular & may be out of stock so I will also link similar options. If you do purchase anything from Pinkblush be sure to use MARISSAELISE25 for 25% off). I love how comfy these are but can also easily be dressed up. I added my target sandals that look like Birkenstocks & a faux leather backpack.

Look number three is sporty & casual. I am wearing my tried and true favorite straight leg jeans from old navy (also older but they update and bring the style back every year– I will link this years version), super comfortable white sneakers from amazon and a baseball cap.

Which look is your favorite? Let me know on Instagram or in the comments below!
