10 Outfits for the Fourth of July (Without Buying Anything New)

I love Independence Day—it’s one of my favorite holidays. We all get decked out in red, white, and blue, go to a local parade, then go back to my parents’ house and swim, eat and listen to Toby Keith and patriotic country music all day long. It’s always a fun time!

Here are some outfit ideas I put together using what I already have in my closet. They’re all fairly simple but definitely all outfits I would wear and I’ll probably choose one of them as my actual outfit for the 4th. I’m not much of a blue girl, so denim is usually my go-to for that color!

7 Things in Your Closet That Double as Swimsuit Cover-Ups

I like a cute designated bathing suit cover up as much as the next girl, but most of the time I end up using an item from my closet to wear over my swimsuit. They’re things I can wear otherwise (which is always nice, especially if you’re on a trip and need to pack light!), and are comfy!

So, here are 7 items (that you probably already own!) that you can wear over your swimsuit.

1. Linen (or cotton!) shorts—always comfy and dry so fast!

2. A flowy dress—one of my favorites because it barely touches your body.

3. Linen pants (or cotton!)—a little more coverage than shorts and just as fast drying.

4. An oversized tee—comfy and easy!

6. Denim shorts—maybe not as fast drying, so probably better for wearing BEFORE swimming.

A linen (or cotton) button up—this is my personal favorite. Keeps the sun off your shoulders and looks super chic.

Make your “Denim Shorts + a Top” More Interesting

It’s easy to get stuck in the rut of getting dressed in the morning and reaching for a plain tee with denim shorts everyday. It’s a cute look and I really love it, but sometimes I want a little bit more variety.

Here are 6 different types of tops you can pair and wear with your denim shorts (or jeans!) instead of a plain white tee.

If you prefer video content, watch the reel HERE.

1. A graphic tee

A graphic tee is a cute way to feel comfy and still look a little more elevated in the “denim shorts + a tee” uniform. My favorite graphic tees are from Mountain Moverz (use MARISSA20 for $$ off)!

2. A high neck tank

A high neck tank is such a great alternative to a plain tee. I think it’s so cute with a couple layered necklaces!

3. A blouse

Any little top that is different is always a cute option with denim shorts! I love this babydoll style top and I also have some cute textured tanks that I love to throw on for something a little more interesting.

4. A little white tank (or tee!)

A white top and denim is a classic in my book! I love how they pair together. This tank is SO OLD (from my highschool days) but I’ll link some cute ones that are still available.

5. A button up top

A button up top (cotton or linen especially!) is one of my favorite items to pair with denim shorts. It works great as a layer over a tank or even on its own.

6. A sweater tank

A sweater tank is adds fun texture to a denim shorts outfit. This one comes in lots of colors and o really like the crewneck on it and the side slits.

What kind of top do you like to wear with your denim shorts?! Should I do a second part to this and add more items?
